The polishing facility is a laboratory responsible for the production of various types of mineralogical, petrographical, soil and other types of preparations. Such samples are most often used for different types of microscopy as well as microprobe analyses. 

The laboratory mainly produces:

  • covered and polished thin sections
  • polished hand samples or preparations of grains in resin
  • cutting and polishing of rock samples 
  • soil sections
  • preparations for fluid inclusion studies 
  • vacuum impregnation and dry sample preparation

Covered/polished thin section

  • Prices include cutting (applies to original samples up to 8 cm).
  • Prices do not include cutting of samples larger than 8 cm, compaction of loose, porous or fragmented samples, pre-casting etc. (these tasks will be performed at additional costs as stated in Pricing).

Samples sent to the Facility should possess the following characteristics:

  • size up to 8 cm
  • free from impurities (mud, moss,..)
  • samples should be marked

The Polishing facility will give priority to samples submitted from within the Department of Geological Sciences which we strive to produce within one month.
